ROLLING VALLEY STAFF SHOUT OUT!!!!!

Each year, the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM), an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, selects one Elementary (K-5) and one Middle (6-8) Educator of the Year to represent Virginia through exemplary mathematics teaching.

The selection process is highly competitive, with candidates required to submit an essay detailing how their teaching aligns with research-based best practices, notable accomplishments, and contributions to the mathematics education community, along with three letters of recommendation. The award committee includes VCTM board members and often representatives from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Winners are honored at the VCTM annual conference, which this year will be held in Virginia Beach, in front of an audience of over 500 Virginia teachers, leaders, and VDOE members.

We are excited to announce that two Rolling Valley staff members have been selected for this prestigious award:

  • Sara Parrish (6th Grade): Middle School Mathematics Educator of the Year
  • Anna Markel (Kindergarten): Elementary Mathematics Educator of the Year

This recognition highlights their outstanding dedication, expertise, and impact on the field of mathematics education. Please join us in congratulating Sara and Anna on this incredible achievement!

International Night:

Exploring Measurement in 2nd Grade!

Our second graders participated in an exciting hands-on learning experience as they became doctors and nurses for the day! Through this engaging activity, students explored measurement by using measuring tapes and rulers to determine the length of doll arms and legs, measuring head circumferences, and weighing their "babies." They recorded their measurements and compared results, deepening their understanding of math in real-world scenarios. This transformative classroom experience made learning both meaningful and fun!

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Day of Service

On the third Monday of January, people throughout the United States join in honoring the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we witness nations around the world continue to struggle under the weight of violence, hate, and poverty, today’s social, political, and economic landscape reveals the urgent necessity of Dr. King’s philosophy and methodology of Nonviolence (Nonviolence365™). This history is a foundational part of American history.

Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Dr. King year-round, and the celebration of a Day of Service is an opportunity to honor his work and legacy by actively participating in making our communities cleaner, safer, and more welcoming.

School Improvement & Innovation Plan (SIIP):

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

As we finish the first half of the school year and prepare to welcome a new year, I want to take a moment to share the incredible progress we've made toward our School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP) goals!

This year, we are focused on three key areas:

  • Reading: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Reading Profile.
  • Mathematics: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Mathematics Profile in the problem-solving strand.
  • Portrait of a Graduate: By June 2025, 100% of students in Grades K-6 will self-reflect on their growth in communication from the beginning to the end of the year as measured by a checklist and/or team-created interviews or reflection sheets.

We’ve already collected our baseline data and are using this information to strategically guide our instruction, ensuring all students continue to make progress in these specific areas.

To involve our families in this important work, we’ve hosted two Principal Coffee and Instructional Insight meetings. These gatherings have been wonderful opportunities to connect, share, and learn about the strategies our teachers are using to elevate instruction in math and reading.

Our teachers have been implementing best practices, including strategies from Hands Down, Speak Out, to enhance classroom discussions and foster student engagement. We're excited to see the positive impact these approaches are having on your children’s learning experiences.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child’s education. Together, we’re building a strong foundation for success!

December 20 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We had a busy and exciting week filled with wonderful activities and celebrations! Our 3rd grade students had an incredible field trip to the National Children’s Museum, where they explored hands-on STEAM activities that sparked their curiosity and creativity. We also enjoyed a fantastic band and strings concert that showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our student musicians.

To close out the week, we celebrated former principal Dr. Maureen Boland, who was honored with a resolution from Delegate Kathy Tran of the Virginia General Assembly. The resolution recognized Dr. Boland's outstanding years of service in education and her lasting impact on the community. Dr. Boland was joined by her father and husband for this special celebration, making the occasion even more meaningful.

As we look forward to winter break, we hope you and your family take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments together. Stay safe, and have a joyful and peaceful holiday season!

December 6 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

The cold snap cam quickly! Even with the colder weather our students still managed to enjoy recess! As temperatures drop, please remind your students to grab their jackets on the way out and bring them home after school. If you think your student might have misplaced their coat, our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets and hats—come take a look! If your family needs assistance with winter gear, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Next week, we’re kicking off an optional Spirit Week! Check below for the daily themes and items your students can wear to join the fun. This follows our “Secret Underground Spirit Week,” where staff dressed up with a theme unbeknownst to students. It was so much fun seeing some of our students piece it together and guess what was going on!

Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for December 17th when RVES will host the Winter Band and Strings Concert.

Stay warm and have a safe weekend!

Building Communication Skills in Second Grade!

This week, our second graders focused on improving their ability to communicate effectively by practicing the art of paraphrasing. They learned how to restate each other's ideas in their own words, a skill that enhances listening, understanding, and collaborative discussions. Great job, second grade, on strengthening these important skills!

Preparing For Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care

Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

November 22 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

Today we wrapped up our Book Fair, and a huge thank-you goes out to everyone for your support in making this such a successful event! A special shoutout to Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Rucker for dedicating so much time and effort to setting up and running the fair throughout the week.

Below, you’ll find photos from two exciting events: the Pyramid Challenge and our Thanksgiving Luncheon!

  • Pyramid Challenge:
What a fantastic turnout we had this year! Rolling Valley won the Participation Award, with 35% of our student population taking part. We also earned second place for the Points Award, with 12 Rockin' Robins finishing in the top 5 of their respective races. Even Rocky had an impressive run, holding first place until a minor detour took him off track — he’ll be back stronger next year!

  • Thanksgiving Luncheon:
It was wonderful to welcome so many family members into the school for our Thanksgiving luncheon. Sharing this special time with our community was a wonderful experience, and we’re so thankful for your participation.

This week, we also hosted K-3 and 4-6 Community Gatherings, where 3rd and 6th grade students showcased their recent classroom projects. It was inspiring to see the creativity and hard work our students put into their learning.

We love to hear from our community! A friendly reminder that next week is the final week to submit Outstanding Employee Nominations. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the form and help us celebrate the amazing things our staff are doing.

Lastly, thank you for your support and communication, which ensured a smooth early release this past Monday. Our next early release Monday isn’t until February. We will send out future communication when that date gets closer.

Thank you all again for your continued support, and have a wonderful weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal
