What's happening in our classrooms! Persusive Writing and Communication

Our 5th grade students have been hard at work developing their persuasive writing skills! Recently, they engaged in thoughtful discussions, sharing ideas, and communicating their perspectives on various topics, including more recess time, owning pets, and whether we should have school uniforms. As they listened and responded to one another, their ability to express and refine their opinions through discourse grew stronger.

Rolling Valley Families,

We’ve had such wonderful weather this week, and the students have been enjoying their time outside on the playground and field! We’re excited to share the activities happening in our classrooms, and we look forward to seeing families at our upcoming Chalk the Walk event next Friday, September 13, from 5-7 PM.

In the classroom this week, our second graders observed caterpillars and learned all about what they eat and how they transform into butterflies. It has been an exciting experience for them!

Have a great weekend!

What's happening in our classrooms! The Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab for students in grades 1-3 focuses on the theme of perseverance and risk-taking while also developing the Portrait of a Graduate skill of communication. Over the course of a month, students rotate through various lab activities. They begin with a read-aloud session, engaging in "Ask and Imagine" questions, followed by hands-on exploration of materials to develop their plans. Students then create and test models, review data, and make any necessary final adjustments. Throughout the process, they explicitly document their improvements and reflections, fostering a mindset of continuous learning and resilience.

August 29 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We've had a short but full week here at RVES! This week, we kicked off our first Principal Advisory Committee meeting, where our third graders shared what they love about our school and suggested changes they'd like to see. Their insights are invaluable in helping us set goals that align with our school's vision and objectives. We’re excited to meet with our sixth-grade representatives in the upcoming school year!

In addition, our students have been getting into the swing of things, establishing routines with morning meetings, practicing hallway expectations, and creating classroom agreements. Morning Meetings are an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically. Each morning, students and teachers will gather together for twenty to thirty minutes and interact with one another during four purposeful components: Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, and the Morning Message.

We hope you and your family have an enjoyable and safe long weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 3!

Our students have hit the ground running with instruction already underway, and our mornings have been filled with warm greetings and engaging morning meetings. We were also excited to welcome students from West Springfield High School, who came to play instruments for our students. Their visit was part of an effort to recruit students for our band and strings programs in grades 4-6.

As a reminder, there will be no school next Friday, September 30. We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!

  • No backpacks or other bags will be allowed in the stadium.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
  • The purpose for students who attend our varsity football games is to watch the game, cheerleaders, band, and dance team.
  • We cheer for our team and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
  • The gates to the stadium will open at 6:15pm.
  • All students need to leave immediately following the game.
  • Elementary & middle school students must always be supervised by an adult.
  • If you leave the game, you will not be able to re-enter the stadium.
  • Whistles, air horns and similar noisemakers are prohibited.

Our goal is to create a positive community event.  Any behaviors that take away from this goal may result in removal from the game.  LET’S GO SPARTANS!

Immunizations

In Virginia, it's required by law for students to have certain immunizations to attend school. This is supported by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Families of students with incomplete immunization records need to provide acceptable proof of immunization to their child's school as soon as possible. You can find the list of required immunizations on the General Registration Immunizations webpage.

If your child’s immunizations are incomplete, here's what you need to do:

  1. Get your child’s immunization record from one of these places:
  • Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
  • If your child was immunized outside Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
  • Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
  • Submit your child’s immunization record to your child’s school.

Families should submit their child’s completed immunization records before September 30.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more information.

Walking Students to Class

We are excited to welcome students back into the building on the first day of school! Families are welcome to walk their child to class on this special day. Rest assured, our RV staff will be on hand to ensure that all students get to their classrooms safely.

Additional First Week Reminders!

Bus Transportation:

Transportation has been reaching out to families whose children are assigned to a bus, providing details such as the bus stop location, approximate pick-up time, and drop-off time. You can also find this information in your ParentVUE account. Please be aware that slight adjustments to routes may be necessary during the first few weeks of school.

We recommend arriving at your bus stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time during this period. We kindly ask for your patience as our bus drivers learn the routes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

June 12 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

What a week it's been at RVES! Today we celebrated two students (2nd and 5th grader) who earned the Rockinest Robin Award! Earlier in the week 6th-grade had the promotion ceremony that was followed by a party, and today they walked the halls giving high-fives during their clap-out! A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who made our 6th-grade party unforgettable, especially those staff members who took a dip in the dunk tank - Mr. Simmons, Mr. Gawen, and Mr. Painter!

To our amazing 6th graders, as you prepare to continue your journey into middle school, please know that you will be missed. Remember once a Rockin’ Robin, always a Rockin’ Robin.

To all our Rockin' Robins, we wish you a summer filled with sunshine, laughter, and endless possibilities! Don't forget to dive into the summer reading challenge and explore the great outdoors. Take this time to rest, recharge, and make fun memories.. We can't wait to see you back in the fall for another amazing school year ahead! 🎉📚☀️

Important Dates:

Lost Laptop Power Cords – FCPSOn Laptops – Grades 3-6

If the FCPS Dell 65W power adapter that was assigned to your child with the FCPS laptop is not returned with the laptop, it will need to be replaced.  Families are responsible for the cost of replacement and can pay for it through MySchoolBucks here: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ver2/getmain?requestAction=home between 5/21/24 and 6/14/2024.  The cost of the replacement power cord is $29. We ask that you pay for the replacement power adapter through MySchoolBucks rather than buy a replacement elsewhere. The school will use your payment to purchase a new Dell 65W power adapter like the one originally issued. We cannot accept third-party replacement cords as returns for the original as it is a safety and compatibility concern.  You are welcome to purchase a replacement at any time one is needed.  Non-working Dell power adapters are replaced by FCPS, so please send those to school with your student and ask that they or their teacher submit a tech support request.

MySchoolBucks - Getting started is a simple three-step process!

  1. Download the app or visit the MySchoolBucks homepage and click on “Sign Up Free”.
  2. Create a user profile with your email address, establish a password, and set up your security questions.
  3. Add a Student to your account using the student’s name, date of birth, and/or student ID number. (Some schools and districts may require either the student’s date of birth or student ID number.)

If you have any questions regarding MySchoolBucks or the steps to take to replace the lost power cord, please contact Anne Walker, the school Finance Assistant, in the Rolling Valley Main Office at [email protected] or by calling 703-923-2700.

June 7 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

This was the last full week of the school year! We made sure it jam-packed with fun activities to celebrate the end of the school year!

Grades 4-6 enjoyed a sunny field day on Tuesday, with the water station being the favorite activity of the day! Grades 1-3 had field day on Wednesday, squeezing in all their activities before the rain arrived. Kindergarteners had a blast with their own indoor field day in the gym! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this such a success!

Fairfax County librarians visited our school to share exciting summer reading programs for all ages. Our talented string students performed a fantastic evening concert followed by a school-wide concert.

Former Rockin' Robins participated in a special Senior Walk this week, filling our current students with excitement for their own graduation day someday. To top it all off, our 6th graders showcased their public speaking skills in a Toastmasters competition.

Have a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone next week for the last few days of the 2023-2024 school year!

May 31 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

What an exciting week it has been for our Rockin' Robins! Even with a short week, our students were engaged in numerous activities both in the classrooms and on field trips.

The 3rd graders had a fantastic time exploring Colvin Run! After their adventure, they returned to school and swiftly prepared for their "Temples and Tombs" performance, which was a great success thanks to their hard work and practice.

The much-anticipated trip to The St. James was a hit among our 6th graders. They enjoyed their final field trip of the year, and we received numerous photos capturing their fun-filled day.

Our dedicated student musicians delivered a great evening and school-wide concert. They did such a great job truly showing all their hard work and preparation over the course of the year.

Our kindergartners proudly presented their knowledge about ants in a community gathering. Their song about ants was a big hit, with many students in the audience joining in the fun.

We had a wonderful week and are looking forward to next week’s activities, including Field Days!

Have a great weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno
