December 20 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We had a busy and exciting week filled with wonderful activities and celebrations! Our 3rd grade students had an incredible field trip to the National Children’s Museum, where they explored hands-on STEAM activities that sparked their curiosity and creativity. We also enjoyed a fantastic band and strings concert that showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our student musicians.

To close out the week, we celebrated former principal Dr. Maureen Boland, who was honored with a resolution from Delegate Kathy Tran of the Virginia General Assembly. The resolution recognized Dr. Boland's outstanding years of service in education and her lasting impact on the community. Dr. Boland was joined by her father and husband for this special celebration, making the occasion even more meaningful.

As we look forward to winter break, we hope you and your family take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments together. Stay safe, and have a joyful and peaceful holiday season!

School Improvement & Innovation Plan (SIIP):

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

As we finish the first half of the school year and prepare to welcome a new year, I want to take a moment to share the incredible progress we've made toward our School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP) goals!

This year, we are focused on three key areas:

  • Reading: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Reading Profile.
  • Mathematics: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Mathematics Profile in the problem-solving strand.
  • Portrait of a Graduate: By June 2025, 100% of students in Grades K-6 will self-reflect on their growth in communication from the beginning to the end of the year as measured by a checklist and/or team-created interviews or reflection sheets.

We’ve already collected our baseline data and are using this information to strategically guide our instruction, ensuring all students continue to make progress in these specific areas.

To involve our families in this important work, we’ve hosted two Principal Coffee and Instructional Insight meetings. These gatherings have been wonderful opportunities to connect, share, and learn about the strategies our teachers are using to elevate instruction in math and reading.

Our teachers have been implementing best practices, including strategies from Hands Down, Speak Out, to enhance classroom discussions and foster student engagement. We're excited to see the positive impact these approaches are having on your children’s learning experiences.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child’s education. Together, we’re building a strong foundation for success!

December 6 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

The cold snap cam quickly! Even with the colder weather our students still managed to enjoy recess! As temperatures drop, please remind your students to grab their jackets on the way out and bring them home after school. If you think your student might have misplaced their coat, our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets and hats—come take a look! If your family needs assistance with winter gear, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Next week, we’re kicking off an optional Spirit Week! Check below for the daily themes and items your students can wear to join the fun. This follows our “Secret Underground Spirit Week,” where staff dressed up with a theme unbeknownst to students. It was so much fun seeing some of our students piece it together and guess what was going on!

Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for December 17th when RVES will host the Winter Band and Strings Concert.

Stay warm and have a safe weekend!

Building Communication Skills in Second Grade!

This week, our second graders focused on improving their ability to communicate effectively by practicing the art of paraphrasing. They learned how to restate each other's ideas in their own words, a skill that enhances listening, understanding, and collaborative discussions. Great job, second grade, on strengthening these important skills!

Preparing For Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care

Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

November 22 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

Today we wrapped up our Book Fair, and a huge thank-you goes out to everyone for your support in making this such a successful event! A special shoutout to Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Rucker for dedicating so much time and effort to setting up and running the fair throughout the week.

Below, you’ll find photos from two exciting events: the Pyramid Challenge and our Thanksgiving Luncheon!

  • Pyramid Challenge:
What a fantastic turnout we had this year! Rolling Valley won the Participation Award, with 35% of our student population taking part. We also earned second place for the Points Award, with 12 Rockin' Robins finishing in the top 5 of their respective races. Even Rocky had an impressive run, holding first place until a minor detour took him off track — he’ll be back stronger next year!

  • Thanksgiving Luncheon:
It was wonderful to welcome so many family members into the school for our Thanksgiving luncheon. Sharing this special time with our community was a wonderful experience, and we’re so thankful for your participation.

This week, we also hosted K-3 and 4-6 Community Gatherings, where 3rd and 6th grade students showcased their recent classroom projects. It was inspiring to see the creativity and hard work our students put into their learning.

We love to hear from our community! A friendly reminder that next week is the final week to submit Outstanding Employee Nominations. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the form and help us celebrate the amazing things our staff are doing.

Lastly, thank you for your support and communication, which ensured a smooth early release this past Monday. Our next early release Monday isn’t until February. We will send out future communication when that date gets closer.

Thank you all again for your continued support, and have a wonderful weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

OCTOBER 31 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

A huge thank you to the PTA, our dedicated teacher volunteers, and parent volunteers who helped make last weekend’s Fun Fair and Haunted House a huge success! It was wonderful to see so many past and present Rockin' Robins join in the festivities.

We also held our first Instructional Insight meeting, where families gathered to learn about our new reading curriculum and how it looks in RVES classrooms. Thank you to those families who were able to attend!

In addition, the PTA sponsored a school-wide assembly, Is it Magic or is it Science? The presentation sparked curiosity and brought lots of laughter and smiles to our students.

With a short week coming up, please make sure to check the important dates below. Wishing everyone a fun and safe long weekend!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our virtual PTA meeting on Monday! It’s been a busy week here at RVES, with our second early release Monday and a fun field trip for kindergarten today! Around the building, classes are working hard to finish strong as we wrap up the 1st Quarter.

We’re also excited for an upcoming PTA-sponsored school assembly on Tuesday, Oct. 29, featuring the presentation "Is it Magic or is it Science?" This interactive experience is sure to inspire curiosity and wonder in our students!

We hope you can join us on Wednesday, Oct. 30, for our first Instructional Insight Coffee! We’ll meet in the library at 9:20 to discuss our reading curriculum and how it’s implemented in classrooms at Rolling Valley.

A few reminders: the Quarter ends on Thursday, Oct. 31, with a 2-hour early release, and dismissal will begin at 2:00 p.m. There is no school on Nov. 1, Nov. 4, and Nov. 5. Please check the Important Dates section below for a full list of upcoming events.

Tomorrow, Oct. 26, is our annual Fun Fair and Haunted House! We look forward to seeing you there. Have a wonderful weekend!

What's happening at RVES! 4th Grade!

Our fourth graders recently took on an exciting teamwork challenge during their morning meeting! Using only a piece of string, teams were tasked with stacking cups as high as they could. Each group had to collaborate, communicate, and strategize to create a plan, test it, and adjust their approach as needed. The activity not only fostered problem-solving skills but also highlighted the importance of working together to achieve a common goal.

Thursday, October 3, is a holiday for all FCPS staff. Schools and offices will be closed for Rosh Hashanah.

What's happening at RVES! Communication & Collaboration at Hemlock!

6th Grade Tackles Hemlocks Ropes Course!

Our 6th grade students recently went on an exciting adventure at the Hemlock Rope Course. Despite a bit of mud, the students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm! This field trip offered a unique opportunity for our students to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills as they navigated a series of obstacles together.

From balancing across ropes to conquering team-based challenges, each group worked together to find creative solutions, encourage one another, and reach the finish line as a cohesive unit. The experience not only tested their physical abilities but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and problem-solving. We are so proud of our students for their perseverance and team spirit!

September 27- News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

Despite the rainy weather this week, we kept spirits high with lots of activities in the classrooms. When the rain let up, we even managed to get outside for some fresh air and outdoor fun. Our second grade had a special moment last week and this week, as they released their butterflies in between the raindrops!

We also held our first PTA meeting of the school year and are incredibly thankful for everything our wonderful PTA does to support our staff and students.

Looking ahead, please note that next week will be a short one with no school on Thursday or Friday.

What's happening in our classrooms! Science!

2nd Grade Explores the Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly

Second graders had an amazing hands-on experience learning about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly! The team discovered caterpillars in the school courtyard and observed their transformation firsthand. Students were able to witness the entire process—from caterpillar to chrysalis, and finally to beautiful butterflies. After watching the incredible metamorphosis, they released the butterflies into nature. This experience brought science to life for our young learners!

At RVES, our students are diving deeper into math through engaging, hands-on activities designed to encourage exploration and active learning. These experiences are further enhanced by opportunities for students to engage in meaningful discourse with their peers. By working together to solve problems and discuss strategies, our students are developing a stronger understanding of key math concepts and building their critical thinking skills. We are excited to see their enthusiasm grow as they take ownership of their learning in collaborative ways!

Our 5th grade students have been hard at work developing their persuasive writing skills! As they listened and responded to one another, their ability to express and refine their opinions through discourse grew stronger.

September 6 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We’ve had such wonderful weather this week, and the students have been enjoying their time outside on the playground and field! We’re excited to share the activities happening in our classrooms, and we look forward to seeing families at our upcoming Chalk the Walk event next Friday, September 13, from 5-7 PM.

As a reminder, our first Early Release Monday is coming up on September 16. If you haven’t completed the survey yet, please find it below and take a moment to complete it.

In the classroom this week, our second graders observed caterpillars and learned all about what they eat and how they transform into butterflies. It has been an exciting experience for them!

Have a great weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

September 16th Dismissal  1:00pm Dismissal

We are at over a 90% completion rate for our survey, and we are still looking to hear from some families. Please take time to complete the early release survey linked below.

As we approach our first 3-hour early release, we expect students to follow their regular routes home. To ensure student safety, please complete this form  https://forms.gle/L37bX7RN2qwDb9oQ6 to confirm your plans for each student. During this time, our instructional staff will be involved in professional development, so it's crucial that we have an accurate count of families needing supervision due to hardship to plan accordingly.

*Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by instructional assistants, school monitors, school staff, central office personnel, and/or volunteers. Your child will not be with their teacher due to required professional development.

What's happening in our classrooms! The Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab for students in grades 1-3 focuses on the theme of perseverance and risk-taking while also developing the Portrait of a Graduate skill of communication. Over the course of a month, students rotate through various lab activities. They begin with a read-aloud session, engaging in "Ask and Imagine" questions, followed by hands-on exploration of materials to develop their plans. Students then create and test models, review data, and make any necessary final adjustments. Throughout the process, they explicitly document their improvements and reflections, fostering a mindset of continuous learning and resilience.
