Storybook Character Day

Today we held Storybook Character Day! It was so fun to see so many creative book character costumes!

Día de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Wednesday, November 1, and Thursday, November 2, are observance days this year. Watch this video to learn more about Día de los Muertos.

The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

EXCITING NEWS!

We are thrilled to annouce that the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children voted on October 26, 2023, to approve Rolling Valley Elementary School as a recipient of the SY 2023-2024 Purple Star Award.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who came together by volunteering time or donations to help make our 2023 Fun Fair & Haunted House such a huge success! This event would not be possible without community effort, parent support, and the chairs who ensured this night was up and running! THANK YOU!

Families, if you are sending in birthday treats to celebrate your child’s birthday, please make sure there are enough treats for the homeroom classroom. Also, we want to keep in mind allergies, so please ensure you are sending in store-bought treats so our teachers and students are aware of what ingredients are in the treats!

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Offered in October

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3-12 in October and again in February or March. It addresses skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful. Key updates to the screener this year include:

  • Different versions for students in grades 3-5 and 6-12.
  • Fewer topics with more questions to provide schools and families with more data to support planning.
  • Additional questions aligned with FCPS’ commitment to educational equity.

SEL Screener results are sent to families via postal mail. Families who wish to opt their child out should complete the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or in SIS ParentVUE.

October 6 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

It’s been a busy week at RV! We had 6th grade go on the first field trip of the year, had fall picture day, and a successful Dollar Drive! The busyness and excitement of the building are great reminders of the energy the students bring us every day!

6th grade had great weather and lots of activities that they enjoyed on their field trip! We were excited to get photos while they were at Hemlock, and even more excited when we heard about their adventures once they returned to the school. We had some big smiles on picture day, and as a reminder, if you missed fall photo day on October 4, our makeup fall photo day is scheduled for November 10. Lastly, we’d truly like to thank everyone for their contributions to the technology dollar drive. Mr. London exceeded his goal and we are excited to purchase a 3D printer for the school in the near future! With exceeding the Dollar Drive goal, we have a week full of fun activities. Please see the flyer below for the different days and rewards.

Have a great weekend!

RVES Family Newsletter Sept. 29

September 29 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

It was great to see so many families at our first curriculum night! We were able to share information on the instruction occurring here at RV around literacy, mathematics, and advanced academic placement. We also held our first school-wide community gatherings (K-3 and 4-6) this week! Mr. Painter and I had the opportunity to lead the school in a morning meeting and share about the Robin Trait (Respect) for the month of September.

It’s hard to believe we are entering the month of October! We are in the full swing of school and as we plan ahead we have some community events to bring our school together. Our first event is the upcoming Haunted House and Fun Fair scheduled for Saturday, October 21. You can find more information about this event in the PTA section of this newsletter.

A quick reminder! We have fall photos on Wednesday, October 4.

Have a great weekend and upcoming week! Hopefully, everyone is able to get outdoors and enjoy the crisp morning weather!

Sincerely,

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary Principal

Saturday, Sept. 23 - Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 23 - October 1, 2023, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

FCPS’ updated Student Rights and Responsibility (SR&R) booklet is available online and in SIS ParentVUE. The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents/caregivers to review and sign the SR&R. The SR&R will be visible upon logging in to SIS ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgment has been completed.

Signatures are due by Friday, September 29. Please contact our front office if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet. Visit the SIS ParentVUE Account Overview webpage for help logging in to your account.

When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits

Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When scheduling trips or family events, try to use weekends and school holidays, and refer to the FCPS Calendar when planning. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence to their school. Most schools have links to their attendance email or notification systems on their homepages. If you are unsure how to report an absence, please call your school’s front office.

Watch the following video with tips on understanding FCPS' school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information.

Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence

FCPS’ 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in our schools. These five goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts. Our equity commitment and a set of measures in each goal will measure our success.

Under Goal 3, every student will learn to use critical and creative thinking. They will meet or exceed academic goals. Students will reach their full potential.

Visit the Strategic Plan webpage for more information.

September 22 - Family Newsletter

Rolling Valley Families,

Hopefully, the third time is a charm! Welcome to the Rolling Valley News You Choose. I will provide weekly communication about the ongoings of the school, the district, and share news from PTA and SEPTA.

We are fully underway and with the cool and crisp mornings this fall weather is a reminder that we are in the full cycle of school! Our teachers have worked to establish routines and get assessments underway as we move through the first quarter. We held our first PTA in-person meeting for the year, and if you’ve not yet joined, please consider being part of the PTA.

A few notes as we look towards next week. Wednesday, September 27 we are holding our Curriculum Night for adults. This is a time you can grab a slice of pizza and take part in 3 different sessions that discuss the curriculum here at RV around Literacy, Mathematics, and Advanced Academics. Future dates to mark on your calendars include Oct. 21 for the Fun Fair &  Haunted House and Nov. 11 for our Pyramid Challenge.

As always! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Veronica Del Bagno

Roliing Valley Elementary Principal

Curriculum Night

Please join us for the Curriculum Night. These sessions are for adults to come and learn about literacy, mathematics, and advanced academics taking place in the classrooms at RVES! While this night is intended only for adults of students at RVES, however, if you need childcare, we have a few West Springfield High School students who will provide childcare. We hope to see you on Wednesday, September 27th!

RVES DOLLAR DRIVE

Rolling Valley will be holding a Dollar Drive to raise funds for a 3D printer. The drive will be set up as a contest between grade levels to raise the most money. Each grade level will have a bin in which students can donate pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars which will be collected during morning arrival. Flyers will be sent home in Friday folders to explain the point system and the school-wide incentives. The top prize for the winning grade level will be a movie popcorn party. The bins will be placed in the front lobby and will be counted every day and grade level progress will be charted.

BIKE RIDERS - FYI!

Families! If your child is a bike rider please make sure they have completed the bike agreement form. We have many students riding their bikes, and very few agreeemtns turned into the school. Bike rider agreement forms can be found in the front office.

Attendance/Absenteeism

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher, so that assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.

Immunization Reminder

The Importance of Up-to-Date Immunizations

Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. While COVID-19 vaccinations are not required, many other immunizations are. Check with your students’ healthcare providers now to make sure they are up to date on their immunizations. Immunization records can now be updated online in SIS ParentVUE through the Online Verification Update form. To access that form, click Online Packets in the top right of the screen after logging in to SIS ParentVUE. Caregivers can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting

Important Forms for Caregivers to Complete

✔️ Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

During the first weeks of the year, caregivers receive many forms to complete. Several of the most important ones are below:

  1. Digital Resources Consent: Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent/caregiver consent before they can be used by students. Find the list of resources which require consent on the Digital Resources - Parent Consent page. This page also includes directions on how to provide permission.
  2. Student Rights and Responsibilities: This document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when they log in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage.
  3. Opt-Outs: The Opt-Out Booklet is online or available from your child’s school. It contains information on:
    1. Parents’ rights to inspect and consent or opt out before their child participates in certain surveys.
    2. Parents’ rights to inspect instructional materials.
    3. Rules regarding student records and disclosure of student information (including photo/video of students) and the right to opt out.
    4. Parents’ rights to opt out of the Social Emotional Learning Screener, physical exams not required by state law, career or social emotional counseling, Library Equity Access Pass Project, and/or Tutor.com.
    5. The process by which complaints may be filed if parents or students believe their rights have been violated.

Paper forms can be signed and returned to school.
