November 8 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

Wow! What a quick week! We wrapped it up with a heartfelt Veterans Day assembly to honor the brave men and women who currently serve and who have served in our nation’s Armed Forces. Thank you all for your dedication and sacrifices.

We enjoyed some spring-like temperatures this week and are taking full advantage before the colder weather sets in! We’ve reached out to all families regarding early release this Monday. If you have questions or didn’t receive the email, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend!

OCTOBER 31 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

A huge thank you to the PTA, our dedicated teacher volunteers, and parent volunteers who helped make last weekend’s Fun Fair and Haunted House a huge success! It was wonderful to see so many past and present Rockin' Robins join in the festivities.

We also held our first Instructional Insight meeting, where families gathered to learn about our new reading curriculum and how it looks in RVES classrooms. Thank you to those families who were able to attend!

In addition, the PTA sponsored a school-wide assembly, Is it Magic or is it Science? The presentation sparked curiosity and brought lots of laughter and smiles to our students.

With a short week coming up, please make sure to check the important dates below. Wishing everyone a fun and safe long weekend!

Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

What's happening at RVES! 4th Grade!

Our fourth graders recently took on an exciting teamwork challenge during their morning meeting! Using only a piece of string, teams were tasked with stacking cups as high as they could. Each group had to collaborate, communicate, and strategize to create a plan, test it, and adjust their approach as needed. The activity not only fostered problem-solving skills but also highlighted the importance of working together to achieve a common goal.

What's happening at RVES! Communication & Collaboration at Hemlock!

6th Grade Tackles Hemlocks Ropes Course!

Our 6th grade students recently went on an exciting adventure at the Hemlock Rope Course. Despite a bit of mud, the students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm! This field trip offered a unique opportunity for our students to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills as they navigated a series of obstacles together.

From balancing across ropes to conquering team-based challenges, each group worked together to find creative solutions, encourage one another, and reach the finish line as a cohesive unit. The experience not only tested their physical abilities but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and problem-solving. We are so proud of our students for their perseverance and team spirit!

September 27- News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

Despite the rainy weather this week, we kept spirits high with lots of activities in the classrooms. When the rain let up, we even managed to get outside for some fresh air and outdoor fun. Our second grade had a special moment last week and this week, as they released their butterflies in between the raindrops!

We also held our first PTA meeting of the school year and are incredibly thankful for everything our wonderful PTA does to support our staff and students.

Looking ahead, please note that next week will be a short one with no school on Thursday or Friday.

What's happening in our classrooms! Science!

2nd Grade Explores the Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly

Second graders had an amazing hands-on experience learning about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly! The team discovered caterpillars in the school courtyard and observed their transformation firsthand. Students were able to witness the entire process—from caterpillar to chrysalis, and finally to beautiful butterflies. After watching the incredible metamorphosis, they released the butterflies into nature. This experience brought science to life for our young learners!

Our 5th grade students have been hard at work developing their persuasive writing skills! As they listened and responded to one another, their ability to express and refine their opinions through discourse grew stronger.

September 6 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We’ve had such wonderful weather this week, and the students have been enjoying their time outside on the playground and field! We’re excited to share the activities happening in our classrooms, and we look forward to seeing families at our upcoming Chalk the Walk event next Friday, September 13, from 5-7 PM.

As a reminder, our first Early Release Monday is coming up on September 16. If you haven’t completed the survey yet, please find it below and take a moment to complete it.

In the classroom this week, our second graders observed caterpillars and learned all about what they eat and how they transform into butterflies. It has been an exciting experience for them!

Have a great weekend!

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

We are at over a 90% completion rate for our survey, and we are still looking to hear from some families. Please take time to complete the early release survey linked below.

To ensure student safety, please complete this form  https://forms.gle/L37bX7RN2qwDb9oQ6 to confirm your plans for each student. During this time, our instructional staff will be involved in professional development, so it's crucial that we have an accurate count of families needing supervision due to hardship to plan accordingly.

*Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by instructional assistants, school monitors, school staff, central office personnel, and/or volunteers. Your child will not be with their teacher due to required professional development.

What's happening in our classrooms! The Innovation Lab

The Innovation Lab for students in grades 1-3 focuses on the theme of perseverance and risk-taking while also developing the Portrait of a Graduate skill of communication. Over the course of a month, students rotate through various lab activities. They begin with a read-aloud session, engaging in "Ask and Imagine" questions, followed by hands-on exploration of materials to develop their plans. Students then create and test models, review data, and make any necessary final adjustments. Throughout the process, they explicitly document their improvements and reflections, fostering a mindset of continuous learning and resilience.

August 29 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We've had a short but full week here at RVES! This week, we kicked off our first Principal Advisory Committee meeting, where our third graders shared what they love about our school and suggested changes they'd like to see. Their insights are invaluable in helping us set goals that align with our school's vision and objectives. We’re excited to meet with our sixth-grade representatives in the upcoming school year!

In addition, our students have been getting into the swing of things, establishing routines with morning meetings, practicing hallway expectations, and creating classroom agreements. Morning Meetings are an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success socially and academically. Each morning, students and teachers will gather together for twenty to thirty minutes and interact with one another during four purposeful components: Greeting, Sharing, Group Activity, and the Morning Message.

We hope you and your family have an enjoyable and safe long weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, September 3!

We had an amazing first week of school! It was wonderful to see so many smiles, reconnect with friends who were missed over the summer, and make new ones. Our students have hit the ground running with instruction already underway, and our mornings have been filled with warm greetings and engaging morning meetings. We were also excited to welcome students from West Springfield High School, who came to play instruments for our students. Their visit was part of an effort to recruit students for our band and strings programs in grades 4-6.

As a reminder, there will be no school next Friday, September 30. We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!

Students will be marked as unexcused during these absences.

Immunizations

In Virginia, it's required by law for students to have certain immunizations to attend school. This is supported by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Families of students with incomplete immunization records need to provide acceptable proof of immunization to their child's school as soon as possible. You can find the list of required immunizations on the General Registration Immunizations webpage.

If your child’s immunizations are incomplete, here's what you need to do:

  1. Get your child’s immunization record from one of these places:
  • Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
  • If your child was immunized outside Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
  • Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
  • Submit your child’s immunization record to your child’s school.

Families should submit their child’s completed immunization records before September 30.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more information.

We recommend arriving at your bus stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time during this period. We kindly ask for your patience as our bus drivers learn the routes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

In this newsletter, you will find information about upcoming dates, the school supply lists for those who might need it, FCPS-sponsored events, and information along with a survey about the FCPS early release Mondays.

Our Voices, Our Future: Multilingual Learners Summit

All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit on Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School. The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.

This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students.  Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience.  A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.

Refreshments and light food will be served. Language and childcare services will be available.  All secondary level multilingual learners have been invited centrally from FCPS via email.  Registration is open for students, families, or staff planning to attend.
