Martin Luther King, Jr. and Day of Service

On the third Monday of January, people throughout the United States join in honoring the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we witness nations around the world continue to struggle under the weight of violence, hate, and poverty, today’s social, political, and economic landscape reveals the urgent necessity of Dr. King’s philosophy and methodology of Nonviolence (Nonviolence365™). This history is a foundational part of American history.

Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Dr. King year-round, and the celebration of a Day of Service is an opportunity to honor his work and legacy by actively participating in making our communities cleaner, safer, and more welcoming.

School Improvement & Innovation Plan (SIIP):

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

As we finish the first half of the school year and prepare to welcome a new year, I want to take a moment to share the incredible progress we've made toward our School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP) goals!

This year, we are focused on three key areas:

  • Reading: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Reading Profile.
  • Mathematics: By June 2025, 100% of all students will increase by one level in communication on the Student Mathematics Profile in the problem-solving strand.
  • Portrait of a Graduate: By June 2025, 100% of students in Grades K-6 will self-reflect on their growth in communication from the beginning to the end of the year as measured by a checklist and/or team-created interviews or reflection sheets.

We’ve already collected our baseline data and are using this information to strategically guide our instruction, ensuring all students continue to make progress in these specific areas.

To involve our families in this important work, we’ve hosted two Principal Coffee and Instructional Insight meetings. These gatherings have been wonderful opportunities to connect, share, and learn about the strategies our teachers are using to elevate instruction in math and reading.

Our teachers have been implementing best practices, including strategies from Hands Down, Speak Out, to enhance classroom discussions and foster student engagement. We're excited to see the positive impact these approaches are having on your children’s learning experiences.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child’s education. Together, we’re building a strong foundation for success!

December 20 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We had a busy and exciting week filled with wonderful activities and celebrations! Our 3rd grade students had an incredible field trip to the National Children’s Museum, where they explored hands-on STEAM activities that sparked their curiosity and creativity. We also enjoyed a fantastic band and strings concert that showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our student musicians.

To close out the week, we celebrated former principal Dr. Maureen Boland, who was honored with a resolution from Delegate Kathy Tran of the Virginia General Assembly. The resolution recognized Dr. Boland's outstanding years of service in education and her lasting impact on the community. Dr. Boland was joined by her father and husband for this special celebration, making the occasion even more meaningful.

As we look forward to winter break, we hope you and your family take this time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments together. Stay safe, and have a joyful and peaceful holiday season!

Veronica Del Bagno

December 6 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

The cold snap cam quickly! Even with the colder weather our students still managed to enjoy recess! As temperatures drop, please remind your students to grab their jackets on the way out and bring them home after school. If you think your student might have misplaced their coat, our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets and hats—come take a look! If your family needs assistance with winter gear, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Next week, we’re kicking off an optional Spirit Week! Check below for the daily themes and items your students can wear to join the fun. This follows our “Secret Underground Spirit Week,” where staff dressed up with a theme unbeknownst to students. It was so much fun seeing some of our students piece it together and guess what was going on!

Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for December 17th when RVES will host the Winter Band and Strings Concert.

Stay warm and have a safe weekend!

Building Communication Skills in Second Grade!

This week, our second graders focused on improving their ability to communicate effectively by practicing the art of paraphrasing. They learned how to restate each other's ideas in their own words, a skill that enhances listening, understanding, and collaborative discussions. Great job, second grade, on strengthening these important skills!

Preparing For Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care

Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Even Rocky had an impressive run, holding first place until a minor detour took him off track — he’ll be back stronger next year!

  • Thanksgiving Luncheon:
It was wonderful to welcome so many family members into the school for our Thanksgiving luncheon. Sharing this special time with our community was a wonderful experience, and we’re so thankful for your participation.

This week, we also hosted K-3 and 4-6 Community Gatherings, where 3rd and 6th grade students showcased their recent classroom projects. It was inspiring to see the creativity and hard work our students put into their learning.

We love to hear from our community! A friendly reminder that next week is the final week to submit Outstanding Employee Nominations. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the form and help us celebrate the amazing things our staff are doing.

Lastly, thank you for your support and communication, which ensured a smooth early release this past Monday. Our next early release Monday isn’t until February. We will send out future communication when that date gets closer.

Thank you all again for your continued support, and have a wonderful weekend!

OCTOBER 31 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

A huge thank you to the PTA, our dedicated teacher volunteers, and parent volunteers who helped make last weekend’s Fun Fair and Haunted House a huge success! It was wonderful to see so many past and present Rockin' Robins join in the festivities.

We also held our first Instructional Insight meeting, where families gathered to learn about our new reading curriculum and how it looks in RVES classrooms. Thank you to those families who were able to attend!

In addition, the PTA sponsored a school-wide assembly, Is it Magic or is it Science? The presentation sparked curiosity and brought lots of laughter and smiles to our students.

With a short week coming up, please make sure to check the important dates below. Wishing everyone a fun and safe long weekend!

We’re also excited for an upcoming PTA-sponsored school assembly on Tuesday, Oct. 29, featuring the presentation "Is it Magic or is it Science?" This interactive experience is sure to inspire curiosity and wonder in our students!

We hope you can join us on Wednesday, Oct. 30, for our first Instructional Insight Coffee! We’ll meet in the library at 9:20 to discuss our reading curriculum and how it’s implemented in classrooms at Rolling Valley.

What's happening at RVES! 4th Grade!

Our fourth graders recently took on an exciting teamwork challenge during their morning meeting! Using only a piece of string, teams were tasked with stacking cups as high as they could. Each group had to collaborate, communicate, and strategize to create a plan, test it, and adjust their approach as needed. The activity not only fostered problem-solving skills but also highlighted the importance of working together to achieve a common goal.

Thursday, October 3, is a holiday for all FCPS staff. Schools and offices will be closed for Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement.

What's happening at RVES! Communication & Collaboration at Hemlock!

6th Grade Tackles Hemlocks Ropes Course!

Our 6th grade students recently went on an exciting adventure at the Hemlock Rope Course. Despite a bit of mud, the students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm! This field trip offered a unique opportunity for our students to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills as they navigated a series of obstacles together.

From balancing across ropes to conquering team-based challenges, each group worked together to find creative solutions, encourage one another, and reach the finish line as a cohesive unit. The experience not only tested their physical abilities but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and problem-solving. We are so proud of our students for their perseverance and team spirit!
